IELTS Requirements to Study in Ireland
IELTS - International English Language Testing System assesses a candidate’s ability to study or work in a country where English is the main language of communication. Some universities may waive off IELTS requirements for admissions onto certain degree courses, however, it is advisable to take IELTS exam for visa application purposes and scholarship eligibility. IELTS Eligibility Conditions
- Students above 16 years of age can take IELTS
- Students can take the IELTS test an unlimited number of times
- IELTS scores are valid upto 2 years from the date of taking the exam
- Those who wish to pursue higher education or work in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are required to take IELTS
IELTS Exam Patterns
- Students are evaluated for four basic skills in English language - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
- Listening, reading and writing sections are tested on the same day while the speaking test can be on the same day or 7 days prior or post the other exams
- Total test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes
- The test duration for the Listening section is 30 minutes, Reading / Writing for 60 minutes each and Speaking for 15 minutes
- Scores are given on a band of 1 to 9 for each section along with an overall score
IELTS Scores and Results
- Some of the best universities in Ireland require an overall IELTS score band of 6.5 with no individual section below 6.0
- Irish Immigration Services require a minimum IELTS score of 5.0 for long duration courses and a score of 4.0 for short term english language preparatory courses of less than 6 months duration
- Results are available online 13 days after the test
